SURVEY ANALYSIS
To strengthen the planning process for my psychological thriller–sci-fi opening sequence, I conducted a targeted audience survey to gather insights into viewer expectations, genre preferences, and the stylistic elements that most effectively create tension and intrigue. The purpose of this survey was to ensure that my creative choices align with audience perceptions while also identifying which conventions, such as lighting, sound design, narrative structure, and glitch-based effects are most engaging for my target demographic. The findings from this survey directly informed several pre-production decisions, helping shape a sequence that is both genre-authentic and audience-driven.

The strong interest in distorted visuals, fragmented timelines, and subtle clues of reality-shifting directly supported my choice to incorporate multiverse and alternate-reality storytelling within the opening sequence. These insights not only validated my creative direction but also helped refine the narrative techniques I will use to build intrigue from the very beginning. The feedback serves as a solid foundation for the next stages of my production planning, ensuring that the final product aligns with viewer expectations while still pushing genre boundaries.
INFORMAL SURVEYS
Informal surveys were also conducted via instagram polls. The audience research clearly indicates a strong preference for a tense, psychologically driven sci-fi thriller, shaping both the visual and narrative direction of the opening sequence. A significant 81% of respondents associate effective atmosphere with threatening and suspenseful lighting, reinforcing the importance of low-key illumination, shadows, and contrast to build unease. This is further supported by the preference for dark and muted colors (75%), as opposed to vibrant or neon palettes, suggesting that a grounded and ominous aesthetic is more effective than stylized visuals. In line with this, 62% favor cool tones such as blue and grey, which conventionally signify detachment, isolation, and emotional coldness. Key themes in psychological thrillers. Narratively, the data highlights a clear inclination toward complex, cerebral storytelling: 94% believe thrillers work best through mind games rather than action, while 69% emphasize mental conflict over external danger. This aligns with the popularity of mirror-self or dual-identity plot twists, with 88% finding them intriguing, suggesting that themes of fractured identity and distorted reality will resonate strongly with the target audience. Additionally, the near-even split between realism (53%) and surrealism (47%) indicates that audiences appreciate a balance, stories that feel believable yet slightly disorienting. Overall, the findings suggest that the most effective approach for the opening sequence is a cold, sterile sci-fi environment that prioritizes psychological tension, ambiguity, and internal conflict, using subdued visuals and mind-bending narrative elements to engage and unsettle the viewer.
